8:30-9:30 Climate outlook for 2017 and beyond:  What does climate science have to offer livestock industries?  How do we deal with forecasts that are too good to ignore but a long way from perfect? Peter Hayman, Principal Scientist in Climate Applications at SARDI. Dr Hayman is an agricultural scientist with an interest in applying climate information to farming systems with a focus on impacts and adaptation to climate change.

9:45-11:15 Practical climate change adaption strategies in a livestock system:  Practical climate change adaption strategies producers can use on-farm, including regionally specific information for Barossa graziers. Through practical exercises producers will assess and improve their ability to adapt to changing seasons. Jason Trompf, Livestock consultant and researcher, LaTrobe University. Dr Trompf is a sheep industry consultant and researcher with LaTrobe University, where he studied agricultural science. He is an engaging extension specialist and farms 500ha with his wife in north-east Victoria.
11:15-11:30 Soil moisture and climate information to better manage climate variability:  BIGG’s latest project will develop a web-based tool to assist local producers make better pasture management decisions using soil moisture monitoring and weather forecasting information. Brett Nietschke, BIGG Coordinator & Facilitator.  Brett works part-time for BIGG as well as running a small mixed farm at Koonunga focussing on crop, wool and prime lamb production.
11:30-12:15 Weather forecasting: What you don’t know does matter: Weather forecasting is an important tool for agriculture. How does gaining a better understanding of forecasts improve how the information can be used on-farm? Robin Schaefer, Mallee farmer and Nuffield Scholar. Robin used his Nuffield scholarship in 2012 to study weather forecasting and how to use the knowledge in his business.
12:15-13:15 Open discussion, lunch and finish Facilitated group discussion on the topics and strategies to apply on-farm.
